cavite -- film screening on may 26th (7:30p)

During the next 2 months there will be film screenings of a new Filipino-American independent film called Cavite.

Here's an excerpt from an email forwarded to me by Eloisa Gomez Borah, who in turn got it from one Vincent Nebrida:

---

"...Winner of the 2006 Independent Spirit's "Someone to Watch" Award and recently screened as an official selection at the prestigious New Directors/ New Films Festival, CAVITE is a heart-pounding suspense thriller and the screen debut of filmmakers Neill Dela Llana and Ian Gamazon. The film follows Adam (Ian Gamazon), a young Filipino American living in San Diego, back to his native country for his father's funeral. Upon his arrival at the airport, the purpose of his visit becomes radically different. An anonymous cell phone call by an unseen Muslim extremist who has kidnapped his mother and sister forces him to undertake a torturous journey to save their lives.

As Adam carries out a series of seemingly random errands ordered by the omniscient voice, he is led through the slums of modern-day Manila and the back alleys of the nearby city of Cavite. Here, the returning expatriate is forced to participate in activities, and bravely faces the challenge of examining his own culture and conscience.

ACCLAIM FOR "CAVITE":

"Ingenious....Among the most striking American independent films of the year!"--The New York Times

"A thriller that's fresh and compelling to the end." -- Los Angeles Times

"A taut, stylish, minimalist thriller." -- New York Post

"Brilliantly resourceful. Sensational camerawork...a landmark in diaspora cinema." --Village Voice

...So I'm planning a TP outing on May 26th @ the Santa Monica Nuart for anyone that wants to see this movie. Email me at raymond@troyphi.com if you want to go, or leave a comment here.

EDIT: There are 3 showtimes on the 26th, and I'm shooting for the 7:30pm showing. Cavite is being shown at the Nuart for only one week. You might want to buy advance tickets here. No matter what you do, let me know if you are going to this screening.
